Rite of Spring 2021
We are delighted to welcome you to the 2021 Rite of Spring Art Show! The show has been an annual tradition for over 30 years. This year the exhibit will take place virtually, showcasing the work of 100 young artists from 9th to 12th grade in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, photography, filmmaking, sculpture and ceramics. The work this year shows dedication and perseverance with students working both in the classroom studio and at home, frequently traveling between the two spaces. We couldn’t be prouder of John Jay’s young artists. They truly show that creativity can’t be stopped. Join us in celebrating their work.

The work included here represents a variety of artistic media and processes.
Photography and Filmmaking
Photography and Filmmaking is a sequence of classes where students explore digital photography, filmmaking and animation. They learn to express themselves creatively using a variety of professional level Adobe software.
Ceramics and Sculpture
Ceramics and Sculpture student work ranges from introductory work to the work of AP 3D students. Students focus on developing three-dimensional forms both on the wheel and using hand building techniques.
Drawing & Painting, Studio Projects
This includes work from Drawing & Painting 1, Drawing & Painting 2 and Studio Projects. Students in Drawing and Painting develop skills in a variety of two-dimensional materials with a focus on observational drawing and idea generation. Students in Studio Projects use a wide variety of materials to complete work that is driven by their own artistic curiosity.
AP Drawing
AP Drawing is the capstone class for students in the drawing sequence. These students develop an inquiry statement to drive their art making over the course of the year, creating a body of work that highlights their technical skills and creativity.
