Welcome to Multi-tiered System of Supports – Integrated (MTSS-I)

Hello, families.

Katonah-Lewisboro is transitioning from a Response to Intervention (RTI) model to a Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

RTI is an instructional approach that focuses on identifying students who need additional academic support and providing targeted interventions. While RTI has been useful, it primarily addresses academic concerns and often responds after gaps appear.

MTSS offers a broader, more proactive structure, integrating academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports within a single system while emphasizing whole-child well-being and data-based decision making. MTSS strengthens instruction for all students, not only those experiencing difficulty.

As we shift from RTI to MTSS, families and staff may see changes in how supports are organized, how teams review progress, and how we communicate about interventions. This work aligns with state and national expectations and demonstrates our commitment to building a coherent, equitable, and responsive support system for all students.

Sincerely,

What Is a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)?

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a districtwide framework designed to ensure that every student receives the instruction, support, and opportunities needed to succeed. MTSS brings academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and wellness supports together into a unified system so schools can respond quickly and effectively to student needs.

MTSS is grounded in data-based problem solving, with educators regularly reviewing student progress and adjusting instruction and supports to help every learner grow. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) identifies MTSS as a comprehensive approach that provides students with the right level of support at the right time.
